KAZANSKAYA MOTHER OF GOD 19th century, egg tempera, gold leaf gesso on wood panel, two insert splints from reverse on the top and bottom. This icon is of the Hodegetria type from the Greek meaning Pointer of The Way and is usually depicted with the Christ Child giving a blessing as He is held in the arms of the Mother of God. This icon is a prototype of an icon that, according to legend, was miraculously uncovered in the city of Kazan in July 8, 1579 after destroying of fire the home of a soldier Danila Onuchin. His ten-year-old daughter Matrona founded this icon. The Mother of God appeared to her in a dream. On the place where icon was founded after Joann the Terrible, Russian Tsaręs decrees the Monastery was built. Suddenly in 1904 the original icon was disappeared and still not founded. From 1579 till 1904 there are a lot of miracles were occurred and particularly a lot of blind people became sighted after this iconęs miraculous help. The Miracle Working Icon – Kazan Mother of God – is one of the most venerated devotional images of the Mother of God in Russia. 10 1/4" x 12 1/4" (26 x 31 sm.)
